Creating columns in Notion is a powerful way to organize your content and to give your pages, dashboards, or articles a clean and structured look.
This guide will walk you through the different methods and teach you how to put columns on your pages, adjust them, and nest columns in Notion.
Different Methods to Create Columns in Notion
There are several ways to split a Notion page into columns. Keep reading to discover each method and determine which one best suits your needs.
Drag & Drop Blocks to Create Columns
The easiest and most straightforward way to create columns on your Notion pages is to drag and drop individual blocks next to each other, which will automatically arrange them into columns.
2.5
Add Multiple Columns Using the Column Blocks
You can also create columns before adding content by using Notion’s built-in column blocks.
To add one, simply type the slash command /column
or /col
and select one of the options from the popup menu.
You can also specify the number of columns directly in the slash command.
2
For example, create two columns by typing /c2
or /2c
, or three columns by typing /c3
or /3c
. It doesn’t get any easier than that!
Split Content into Columns Using Notion AI
Another way to add columns to a Notion page is by using Notion AI.
This method is particularly useful when you already have existing content that can't be easily dragged and dropped, such as text formatted as a single paragraph rather than separate blocks.

6, 7, 8+ Columns
While there is no built-in column block to create more than five columns at once, you can still create additional columns using the drag-and-drop method explained earlier.
How to Change the Column Width in Notion
Adjusting the size of columns in Notion is just as easy as adding them.
Simply drag the edge of a column left or right to change its size, and repeat this for each column.
2.5
With this method, you can even expand the width of a column section beyond the usual content width on a narrow Notion page.
How to Delete a Column in Notion
To delete one or multiple columns from your Notion page, simply click and drag your cursor across the columns to highlight them, then press the delete button on your keyboard.
2.5
How to Create Nested Columns in Notion
Columns can also easily be nested within other column sections, giving you maximum flexibility to structure and organize your content.
Simply use the same methods mentioned above to create columns within a column.
2.5
Adding Columns to Toggle, Callout & Quote Blocks
Toggle Block
You can easily add two or more columns, including nested columns, to any toggle block.
Just make sure to create the columns from a block that is already inside the toggle itself.
2.5
Dragging an existing column section into a toggle block will cause it to break into vertically stacked blocks.
If you want to add an already existing column section to a toggle block, you can use the following trick:
- Create a new page block by typing
/page
and pressing enter. - Copy the entire column section, open the new page, and paste the column section into it.
- Return to the parent page, open the ⠿ block menu, click on 🔄️ Turn into, and turn the page into a toggle block.
- The resulting toggle block will now preserve the original column structure.
Callout Block
Callout blocks support column sections and nested columns natively as well.
Again, make sure to create the columns from a block that is already inside the callout.
2.5
The same trick that lets you add an existing column structure to a new toggle block also works for callout blocks.
Quote Block
Compared to toggle and callout blocks, adding columns to a quote block requires one extra step.
Create a new content block below the quote block, drag it into the quote block, and then turn that block into two columns as described above.
2.5
The same trick that lets you add an existing column structure to a new toggle block also works for quote blocks.
Adding Vertical Dividers to Your Column Sections
Although vertical dividers aren't available as built-in blocks like horizontal dividers, there are still ways to create vertical dividers to visually separate your column setup.
You can learn all about it in this comprehensive Notion dividers guide.

Creating Columns in the Notion App on Mobile Devices
How to Make Columns on iPad
The Notion iPad app allows you to create columns using the same drag-and-drop method explained above.
Simply tap and hold a content block, then drag it next to another block to create columns.
How to Make Columns on iPhone & Smartphones
On iPhones and other smartphones, Notion columns appear stacked vertically to fit the smaller screen size, which is why Notion currently doesn't offer a way to create column blocks directly within the smartphone app.
